Audio walk + Picnic&#38;nbsp;Collectively created with Oda Projesi and former neighbors of Şahkulu Street.&#38;nbsp; 

2025, Galata neighbourhood, Istanbul


By walking, listening, imagining and picnicking, we revisit artistic, social and discursive projects that Oda Projesi realized in the Galata neighborhood between 2000 and 2005. While activating the collective’s archives and strolling on the streets of Galata, we also look at the neighbourhood that went through a strong gentrification process from today’s perspective. 

The audio walk followed by a picnic around an archive box invites participants to remember collectively in an open and informal space, share knowledge and reflect together on the following questions: How can practice of neighbouring that builds multilayered relationships between Oda Projesi, neighbors and other stakeholders be presented and documented? How can an archive of relationing be presented, mediated and circulated? What is the significance of revisiting a practice of neighbouring in a time of shrinking public space? Can accounts of the participants affect the way we understand these projects, allowing new perspectives?

The publication accompanies the exhibition&#38;nbsp;SOFT Critique, which took place at the&#38;nbsp;Škuc Gallery in Ljubjana.&#38;nbsp;


This publication is &#38;nbsp;created with a motivation to address the place of art writing within the art field, and support writers, art critics, editors, artists or anyone who applies writing in their practice. After all, exhibition-making is not, or should not be, the sole form of supporting artists. What could be the role of a non-profit space that has a strong presence in the country’s independent art and culture scene, operating since 1978? 


Edited together with Tia Čiček, the publication brings together newly commissioned essays. Ewa Borysiewicz touches upon the current and future of art criticism, a creative form, which as some art historians and art critics suppose, may soon become obsolete. Pia Brezavšček describes softness in critique as a “shared process of encounter”, one that allows for transformation in the process, though might be a state of vulnerability. Domen Ograjenšek chooses a literary form of art writing, which merges fiction into theory and theory into fiction.


Valentina Karga’s installation Infrastructure for Feedback (2023), produced for this exhibition, will enable a safe and soft space accompanying the publication and the feedback sessions. Karga’s stone-looking soft sculptures manifesting the questions: What?, Where?, Why?, Who?, When?, provide a self-reflexive infrastructure for grounding oneself. Where do we stand? Who criticises whom and from which perspective?

The project SOFT Critique, co-curated by Tia Čiček and Seda Yıldız, unfolds as a publication, an exhibition and a feedback session, creating a space for knowledge-experience-exchange and reflection. Addressing the ephemerality of exhibitions, as well as the role of art and culture institutions in promoting discourse and feedback exchange in their localities, SOFT Critique reimagines conventional exhibition-making. Against the backdrop of an accelerating art world, the project asks: Can we do it differently?

The aim of the exhibition at Škuc Gallery is to utilise the resources at hand – time, space and budget – to foster reflection, promote discourse and facilitate a so-called soft critique. We question the exploitation of art spaces for rapid reception and production of artworks, aiming to shift the paradigm towards thoughtful engagement and favouring process over output.&#38;nbsp;The acronym SOFT, derived from a type of progress report used to evaluate “Successes, Opportunities, Failures, Threats,” for a business or a project, encapsulates the project’s aim to reflect on the issues with bounded artistic endeavours within an output-oriented framework. SOFT Critique instead focuses on critique, discourse, methods of feedback exchange and the role of art and culture institutions in promoting these issues – beyond exhibition-making – to create a platform for sustainable promotion of art and socio-critical dialogue in its locality. Could we, as individuals and as a community, learn, practise and foster a culture of feedback?

What Knows What, What is What?, full of poems, talks, workshops, and performances, is inspired by the notion of togetherness and co-creation that Škart collective has always prioritized in their socially engaged practice. The program, conceived by Seda Yıldız with Škart and Rob van Leijsen, will take place in different spaces of Salt Galata. Celebrating the one-year anniversary of the book Building Human Relations Through Art, the program will include a workshop about archiving, editing, and printing collectively and a workshop on forming and performing as a choir, taking over the Salt Galata building. As Škart says, “What knows what, what is what?”Come and join this collective fun!

Škart was founded in 1990 in the graphics studio at the University of Belgrade Faculty of Architecture. Dealing with poetry, music, graphic design, and alternative education, the collective’s first decade (1990-2000) was marked by self-released (samizdat) anti-war resistance projects and their sharing on the streets. In the second decade (2000-2010), the group co-founded several collectives and initiatives: Horkeškart and Proba choirs, children’s choirs Deca sa meseca and AprilZMAJun, Defiant Pensioners poetry group, NONpractical Women embroidery group. Since 2010, the collective has been experimenting with site-specific workshops, animated poetry forms, comics, documentary illustrations, and film.

Rob van Leijsen (Tilburg, 1983) is a multidisciplinary graphic designer and writer based in Geneva, Switzerland. He runs his own design studio next to his teaching position at the Visual Communication Department of HEAD–Genève. In 2012, he obtained a master’s degree in Design Spaces and Communication at HEAD–Genève with his graduation project “Art Handling in Oblivion.” Bringing together five art collections stolen during wartime, this catalog was published by Edition Fink in 2014. His most recent book is the bilingual essay Copy, Tweak, Paste: Methods of Appropriation in Reenacted Artists’ Books(Editions Clinamen, 2020).

“Well Beings, In Time of Climate Anxiety” is a public program conceived to accompany the solo exhibition of artist-designer Valentina Karga at the Museum of Art and Design Hamburg. The program, focusing on the emotional effects of the climate crisis, brings together a climate psychologist, a curator and writer, a climate activist, a sound therapist, a researcher and editor, an environmental scientist and a local school choir. By inviting various individuals from different field to unpack such urgent topic that simply relates to anyone, we hope to create a form of togetherness at the intersection of art and so-cial engagement that might bring openness, and help us preparing emotionally and intellectually to be open to change.&#38;nbsp;The program inludes:&#38;nbsp;

To celebrate the launch of the book ‘Building Human Relations Through Art’, which I co-authored and edited, as well as thirty years long artistic practice of Škart, we shared the stage with different groups and individuals the collective has been collaborating with. Two choirs, Horkeškart and Proba,&#38;nbsp;the women embroidery group Škart initiated in the early 2000s, “Non practical women”,&#38;nbsp;friends, friends of friends, and colleages, gathered and shared their experiences of decades long collaboration. The evening, full with songs, poems, embroidery performances, and personal stories, reflects the richness of multilayered relations Škart has built, emphasizing the notion of&#38;nbsp; presentness which they have always priorised in their socially engaged art practice. 


Each visitor, upon enterance, received a gift package designed by Škart; a pocket poetry book, an unpublished essay written by Belgrade based art historian Darka Radosavljević in 1992, and editions of drawings signed by Škart’s member Đorđe Balmazović.

This collection of essays, essays, interviews and images results from L'Internationale’s current focus on the 1990s and, in particular, our wish to identify actions and alliances from that era that form constellations with our own. Most optimistic claims made during that period were hubristic – not least the promise that technology and post–Cold-War politics would turn the world into a super-connected ‘global village’, and that the ensuing spread of civic society and liberal democracy would usher in ‘the end of history’. Cultural institutions – including the museums and galleries that compose the L'Internationale confederation today – were charged with the task of extending civic society and delivering an image of a common and inclusive future. Indeed, confederation members Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA), Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid, and Salt in Istanbul were created in the late 1990s and early 2000s to bolster civic life – a project that is ongoing. At the same time, many conflicts of the current era can be traced back to this period of considerable social and cultural turmoil. The after-effects of the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1992 reverberate with Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine, as we write these words.

However, another less well-known version of the 1990s also exists, from which alternative, often highly local expressions of cultural politics and political activism emerged, and which may yet inspire other futures. This version was shaped by interventions by artists and activists, who acted collectively and in partnership with their communities, in seemingly ‘marginal’ settings, and without the kind of support available in the centres of the 1990s turbo-capitalist boom. Much of their work seemed unfathomable and was dismissed as peripheral by commentators at the time, particularly when it travelled from its place of origin to elsewhere. Yet this output now seems vital and urgent, in harmony with the loud, contemporary calls for decolonisation and self-determination: the rights of peoples to their land, to shape their cultures, to determine the economic and political systems in which their lives are lived – put plainly, the right to a future.

Radio Otherwise is a participatory online radio programme revolving around collective storytelling. Over the 100-day programme of Manifesta 14 Prishtina, contributions to Radio Otherwise will also be broadcast on local radio stations.
The programme begins with contributions by artists Anna Bromley with A voice exists in voicing as well as Susan Philipsz and the Radio International Collective, whose project Radio International is jointly situated at the Grand Hotel Prishtina and the K67 kiosk restored by Ilir Dalipi in Zahir Pajaziti Square. Radio Otherwise, is a project in-the-making at the Centre for Narrative Practice and we invite you to join us in shaping the emerging programme, which will continue after the biennial.

Seda Yildiz’s episode “Building Human Relations Through Art: Belgrade art collective Škart” speaks about inquiring on the possibilities of poetry to apply it in different circumstances.

The content from the book Building Human Relations Through Art, about the Belgrade based collective Škart, will serve as a starting point for this workshop with graphic designer Rob van Leijsen and editor and co-author of the booK Seda Yıldız .&#38;nbsp;The archive of Škart is filled with traces, indicators and signs of collective production. From coupons to choirs to street installations to poems, Škart’s artistic collaborations demand a significant effort from each participant, who are encouraged to speak out and contribute to the whole.

By extracting visual and written forms of collaboration from the Škart archive, we will set in motion a process to define our personal contemporary narratives of collective effort and production. Each participant’s contribution will take shape throughout defined stages of the editing process, propelled by an ongoing back and forth between individual contribution and collective consideration. Finally, we will decide on the desired printed outcome of the workshop together. All image making techniques are valid, as long as contributions can be reproduced.&#38;nbsp;The workshop takes place at our Riso space and is open to any type of image makers, researchers and writers who are comfortable with collaborative processes and printmaking – among others, Riso printing.

A multidisciplinary exhibition in three parts,&#38;nbsp;various locations in Prishtina:&#38;nbsp;Kino ARMATA, Grand Hotel Prishtina, The artist's studio.

Unfixed Place, Ambiguous Time unfolds as three separate exhibition parts and focuses on the multilayered artistic practice of Vigan Nimani (b.1981, Prishtina). It is a mode of presentation in which viewers are invited to navigate between urban landmarks of the city during three days, encompassed by paintings, music, drawings and photography.&#38;nbsp;Educated as a painter, Vigan Nimani played free improvisation &#38;amp; experimental music in the band Tetris, works as a cultural worker in Kino ARMATA foundation and runs a restaurant (an extension to his studio, housing some of his paintings). Since the early 2000’s, he has been an active figure in shaping the local art and culture scene in Prishtina, the capital of Kosovo, which has been developed by the experimentation and self-organization of the inhabitants. Nimani’s close relation to his hometown becomes evident in his artistic oeuvre too. This multidisciplinary exhibition, for the very first time, gathers paintings, drawings, sound and photographs to take a broader look into the artist's practice from the early 2010’s to present. 

The selection of the venues will also help to reveal the exhibition’s thematic focus; the notion of time (past and now), the city's changing urban landscape and the role of artistic practice in activating cultural memory. Kino ARMATA, a former cinema in ‘Yugoslav Army House’, which was later used as United Nations headquarters, will host an audiovisual performance. Surrounded by paintings Nimani will play live without the separation of the audience from the stage. Grand Hotel Prishtina, a Modernist architectural landmark, will host rarely exhibited small paintings on wood and other surfaces. The artist's studio in the old town will be the meeting place to have a conversation and examine his modus operandi closely. Along with drawings on paper, Nimani's&#38;nbsp; photographs documenting the Modernist architecture across Kosovo—which has now become an archive of a very specific&#38;nbsp; era— will be on display.
